Lingnan (University) College started its collaboration with MIT Sloan in 1999 for the International MBA program. This is a program that has delivered many outstanding professional managers and entrepreneurs to Pearl Delta River region and greater China. Now, the expanded international student numbers also made contribution to other global region’s talent pool, like Canada, Russia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, United States and more.
Throughout the past 11 years, Lingnan International MBA program has celebrated its 10th anniversary with MIT Sloan. This celebration has attracted many attentions and discussion about the state of our graduates’ career. A number of Lingnan’s IMBA alumni have created their own business, and others held critical positions in MNCs and local enterprises.
Mr. Feng XU, used to work as a technician for a FMC’s manufacturing division before Lingnan’s IMBA program. He is now the Vice-President of Hewitt (Greater China). Spending more than 100 days flying to different cities and managing the implementation of the company overall strategy. Watching the local enterprise grow is one of his foremost interests at his current position.
Xu joined Lingnan in 2001, he was attracted to Lingnan’s IMBA program by talking to his ex-colleague at P&G, Mr. Xing FANG (alumni of Lingnan IMBA) in 2000. After enrolled at Lingnan, he has become a member of the class council and served his classmates throughout his study. Xu said he loved group discussions and group projects in the IMBA program. These trainings enabled his first career change during the three-year studies at Lingnan helped him to build a stable base for his future career in consultancy.
Nowadays, he still is actively participating in Lingnan’s MBA Mentorship program, constantly sharing his industrial experiences with other alumni, and assisting the college’s strategic movements.
Ms. Jing TIAN, joined the IMBA program in 1999. Now a female entrepreneur and experienced consultant. Her company “Jing Yuan Consultancy” mainly conducts consulting projects for electricity related institutions. She is keen to the “Focus on one project and make it work. Win a client and make friends with them.” With her positive attitude and customized consulting services, “Jing Yuan” became a brand in the niche market.
Jing said Lingnan’s faculties like Prof. Jianqi ZHANG and Prof. Peiguan WU taught them everything that learnt after MIT’s fellowship program and then combined with local business knowledge. She still remembered that her career in consultancy was inspired after her participation in the Lingnan Business Plan Competition. Over 20% of her classmates started their own businesses after graduation. Lingnan has become part of their life memories, it witnessed how Jing and her classmates’ love stories, friendships, beliefs and ideals about life to grow and be realized.
With her full experiences in entrepreneurship, Jing’s volunteered many years for Lingnan’s Business Plan Competition. She also provided many internship opportunities for other Lingnan IMBA students to practice consultancy.
There is a company called “Baidu”, the premium search engine in China. One alumnus, Mr. Jiaping GU was the Vice-GM of Baidu (South China) until year 2009. By April 2009, Du left Baidu and started his own company in E-commerce business, called 56nr.com. 56nr.com is an online platform for e-commerce consulting that can assist different companies to develop strategic thinking in e-commerce field.
Mr. Gu mentioned about Lingnan’s “Education for Service” as his drive for creating his own business. He heard about this motto from his first day at Lingnan IMBA. With his technical background in the IT industry after undergraduate school, he decided to step out this constrained job by applying for Lingnan IMBA program in 2001. Gu said that he was influenced by Lingnan’s full English teaching system which made him a excellent professional manager at Baidu. Now he still benefit from the two-year IMBA program when managing his 56nr.com business. Lingnan IMBA program has a deep imprint on him and his act in business practices.
